Rainer Blatt is a German-Austrian experimental physicist at the University of Innsbruck, Austria, and Research Director at the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information (IQOQI) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW), and vice chairman of the Austrian Science Board. His research centers on the areas of quantum optics and quantum information. He and his team were the first to teleport atoms and to create a “quantum byte”. Rainer Blatt has received numerous awards for his achievements in the fields of quantum optics and meteorology, e.g. the John Stewart Bell Prize, a Alexander von Humboldt Research Award and the Carl-Zeiss-Research Award.
